Orono Beats Grand Rapids in Overtime 74-65

Orono scored the first nine points of overtime as they defeated Grand Rapids 74-65 in the first game of the Minnesota Timberwolves Shootout. Orono scored six straight points to go ahead 49-43, but Grand Rapids rallied to take a 60-54 lead with one minute to go.

Jordan Smith made a jumper and was fouled. He missed the free throw, but Erik Peterson grabbed the rebound and scored to cut the lead to 60-58. Dan Wilde missed both free throws with 40.2 seconds left. Jeremy Borg of Orono tied the game at 60-60 with 13 seconds left. Grand Rapids guard Michael Johnson's outside shot was blocked by Chase Myhran as the clock expired forcing overtime.

Smith opened the extra period with a bucket and Myhran added a three-pointer from the right baseline. Borg scored to put the Spartans up 67-60 and took a charge on the other end, sealing the win.

Grand Rapids led 32-30 as Michael Johnson and Dan Wilde scored ten points each at the break. Jeremy Borg and Jordan Smith had nine points apiece for Orono.

Smith led all scorers with 25 points as he made nine of 21 shots from the field. He also grabbed nine rebounds. Borg finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds for the Spartans.

Grand Rapids was led by Eric Stark, who finished with 18 points. However, he was just six of 22 from the field. Wilde had 16 points and Johnson scored 15. Kevin Rabbers added ten points and eleven rebounds off the bench.
