Osseo-Apple Valley Playoff Preview

Sam Dower leads #3 seed Osseo

Osseo meets Apple Valley in the final of the four first round Class AAAA playoff games. The following is a preview of the Orioles and Eagles' clash.

Osseo finished 28-1 last season, losing to rival Robbinsdale Cooper 60-59 in the section finals. They got revenge last week, knocking off the Hawks 58-51. The Orioles have won 14 straight games and are led by Sam Dower, a 6-foot-9 senior who signed with Gonzaga. Dower saw his stock rise with a strong showing this summer with the Net Gain Sports AAU program and picked the WCC power over interest from Marquette, Minnesota, California and George Mason. He was named first team Minneapolis Star Tribune All-Metro and is one of five Mr. Basketball finalists. He is averaging 24.6 points and 12 rebounds per game. Dower is a skilled left-handed big man who has made great strides in the past year. The Orioles had serious graduation loss as they had to replace leading scorer Carrington Tankson (San Jacinto CC), Dan Brown (a two-sport standout who is at Division II Augsburg) and 7-foot center Zach Peterson (Division II Minnesota State-Moorhead). Aaron Anderson, a 5-foot-10 junior transfer from Hopkins is averaging 10.2 points per game. John Rowland (8.4 points per game), Nick Djerf (7.4) and Jayvin Reynolds (7.1) provide additional scoring punch.

Apple Valley was the fourth seed in section 3. They have good balance with three double figure scorers in David Bauer (12.1 points per game), sophomore Tom Schalk (11.7) and Mitch Bires (10.8). Varmah Sonie, Minnesota's Mr. Football, has excellent quickness and averaged 9.7 points per game for the Eagles.
