Gopher Recruit Focusing on One Position

Cypress Ridge's Kevin Johnson

Houston's Kevin Johnson is focused in on receiver for 2009 and hoping to improve on an impressive 2008 season. So what is Johnson looking for in a college and where do the Gophers stand? He talked about it with GoldenSports.net.

Kevin Johnson, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound wide receiver from Cypress Ridge High School in Houston, TX, was the No. 1 receiving target for five-star LSU recruit Russell Shepard in 2008. But more importantly for Minnesota fans, Johnson played on the same side of the ball as 2009 Minnesota recruit Hasan Lipscomb.

While he also backed up Shepard as quarterback, he has decided to focus solely on receiver next year.

"The plan was I was going to take over [at quarterback], but it would be more efficient with me staying at receiver," he said.

Johnson had 45 catches and hauled in 12 touchdowns last year. So the decision to stay at receiver certainly does seem "efficient." Johnson is also the punter for Cypress Ridge, and he averaged 45 yards a punt, earning him all-district honors as a punter as well as a receiver.

Johnson has received two offers so far. Baylor was the first, and earlier this month he received his second offer from Minnesota – those two schools are the ones that have been recruiting him hardest. Minnesota tight ends coach Derek Lewis and the newest addition to the Minnesota staff, wide receivers coach Richard Hightower, have been out front talking to the Cy Ridge star.

Johnson will attend a few camps this summer.

"I plan on attending maybe about three or four [camps]. The only one I know for sure I will be at is Rice for the Nike Camp on May 9," Johnson said.

As far as the important factors Johnson looks for in a future school, academics rank high, along with other key elements.

"I want a school with a nice program, good enthusiasm out of the coaches, and last but not least, I also want a good academic program, somewhere that will set me up academically," he said.

"I don't really mind about the distance or the weather, you know, the cold – none of those things will be a factor." he stated bluntly.

Johnson doesn't have any clear favorites yet.

"I'm looking at a lot of schools, but right now I'm just going to keep it open. I'm open to everybody right now," he said.

One aspect of Johnson's game stands out above the rest. When asked to describe the strongest aspect of his game, he replied in one word without hesitation: "Speed."
