Jimmy Gjere, a 6-foot-7, 270-pound junior offensive tackle from New Brighton (MN) Irondale High who picked up a scholarship offer from Minnesota earlier this season, was watched by Gopher head coach Tim Brewster last Friday during his hockey game. Gjere, who attended the Minnesota Gophers Elite Camp this past summer, has also received offers from fellow Big Ten schools Iowa and Wisconsin.
Jimmy Gjere
helped pace the Knights to a 6-3 record this season as they had one of the top rushing attacks in the state with
Chichi Ojika
. The Knights won six straight games before losing to Hopkins in the season finale and were upset by No. 7 seed Roseville in the first round of the Class AAAAA Section 2 playoffs.
Gjere received a scholarship offer from
Minnesota
and attended their Elite camp and several Gopher games. He is also getting interest from Big Ten schools
Iowa
and
Wisconsin
. Gjere received a scholarship offer from the Badgers Nov. 10.
Gjere received several honors this season as he was named All-Metro by the Minneapolis Star Tribune and Kare 11 Sports and was selected North Suburban Conference Lineman of the Year. He was second team All-State by the Associated Press.
Gjere has helped lead the Kinghts to a 6-15-1 mark in hockey and he has three goals and four assists. Brewster watched Gjere play last Friday in a 4-0 loss to Totino-Grace.
Gjere also plays high school baseball. Irondale baseball coach Chris Fink previously told GoldenSports.Net that Gjere has excellent potential as a baseball player.
"He had a fantastic summer playing for our 16-and-under team. He is one of the best up-and-coming players. He is a pitcher, but he can also really hit a baseball," Fink said.
