Mahtomedi OL Tom Olson Commits to Minnesota

Tom Olson commits to Minnesota

Tom Olson, a 6-foot-4, 275-pound sophomore guard from Mahtomedi, has committed to Minnesota, according to sources close to the program. Olson comes from a football family. His father, Ed, played for Minnesota from 1980-82 and older brother Ed Jr. is a Gopher commitment. The younger Olson helped form one of the state's top offensive lines as they opened holes for All-State rusher Stephen Johnson.

Tom Olson helped lead the Zephyrs to a 5-7 mark, losing to Northfield 21-13 in the state quarterfinals. The record is misleading as they had to forfeit five games due to using an ineligible player.

Olson was a freshman starter as Mahtomedi finished 10-4, losing to Totino-Grace 13-8 on the last play of the game of the Prep Bowl.

Olson told GoldenSports.Net that attending Minnesota and playing close to home had its advantages.

"There are a lot of ties with my brother and my dad. It would be great to go anywhere, but Minnesota would be really cool, too," he said.

Olson said that he was hearing from most of the schools in the Big Ten, Colorado and Nebraska.
