Matt Garin is a Golden Gopher

Matt Garin commits to Minnesota

Matt Garin, a 6-foot-4, 223-pound senior defensive end from Eastview, has committed to Minnesota in an exclusive GoldenSports.Net interview. Garin took his official visit to Minnesota this weekend and is the second local player to commit to the Gophers today. Garin led Eastview to a 7-4 mark. GoldenSports.net received a call from Garin this morning with the news of his commitment.

Matt Garin led Eastview to a 7-4 mark this season, defeating Bloomington Kennedy and Apple Valley in the Section 3 playoffs before falling to Rosemount.

Garin said that there was plenty of positives to like about Minnesota.

"The best part was that I took all my officials and those really showed how much I am going to miss Minnesota, miss my family and my friends. I wanted to play for the state and how nice everyone was. The players. I got to hang out with all the players last night. I was with Mike Rallis and Ryan Grant all night. I would've never, ever thought that I would be friends with Ryan Grant (who was the quarterback for Eden Prairie when they knocked Eastview out of the state tournament), but I am now. Everyone was really cool, like Shady Salamon and John Nance and all those guys were cool. The players were really cool and the coaches in particular. I love all the coaches. Coach Roof is a really good coach. He has turned the whole defensive program around. Coach Cross is a really good guy. He is a good guy to look up to. He is going to be a really good coach to learn everything from and Big Brew is a good guy."

Garin had previously said that he hoped to make his decision early in the fall, but said that he is glad that he waited and got to see the Gophers get off to a strong 7-3 start after a 1-11 season last year.

"That really helped me out a lot to see them start to win and everything. It shows how much faith you can have in them. Yesterday, when we went to the new stadium, I was amazed by it. I took the whole tour and was really excited to see how it was going to be like. Me and Ra'Shede (Hagemen) committed today."

Garin, who is expected to play rush end in college, was named Associated Press second-team last season after leading the Lightning to the Prep Bowl semifinals and an 11-2 mark. Garin was the team's leading tackler from the defensive end position.

Garin's father, Dave, played high school football at Bloomington Kennedy. He played at St. Thomas University, Normandale Community College and UNLV.

Garin received scholarship offers from Washington State, Oregon State, Air Force, Stanford, Western Michigan, Colorado, Arizona State, Minnesota, Boise State and West Virginia.

Garin played defensive end for the Lightning and also contributed to their short-yardage package.

Garin also played on the Eastview lacrosse team that advanced to the state semifinals.

Garin is an excellent student with a 3.49 GPA and a 23 ACT score.

Eastview has produced Gophers football players John Shevlin, Ryan Ruckdashel and Jason Meinke.
