Trevor Mbakwe Commits to Minnesota

Trevor Mbakwe, a 6-foot-7 sophomore forward from Miami-Dade (FL) CC, has committed to Minnesota, according to sources close to the program. He visited Minnesota last weekend for Tubby's Tip-Off. Mbakwe, who played high school basketball at Henry Sibley and St. Bernard's, transferred from Marquette where he played as a freshman.

Trevor Mbakwe was expected to be a key contributor last season as a freshman, but was declared out for the year after suffering a knee injury in practice. He underwent surgery on Nov. 9, but on Feb. 15 was declared fit to play and decided to take part in the final portion of the Golden Eagles’ schedule rather than sit out the rest of the season as a redshirt. He played in 10 games, averaging 1.7 points and 2.3 rebounds per game as a reserve.

Mbakwe, who had a 2.9 GPA at Marquette, picked Minnesota over interest from Miami, Alabama and LSU.

Mbakwe is the fourth player to commit to Minnesota, joining Royce White of Hopkins, Rodney Williams of Robbinsdale Cooper and Justin Cobbs from Bishop Montgomery. They have 14 players committed to the team next season, which means someone would have to transfer or a player, possibly Williams, would not qualify.
