put on a shooting display this summer that has earned him several scholarship offers and plenty of recruiting interest. In fact, the only thing that has slowed Stefan down is that he recently suffered a broken nose.
Stefan underwent surgery Tuesday and will be fitted with a mask Monday that he will likely wear most of the year. Stefan participated in an open gym Thursday in front of coaches from Michigan
, North Dakota State, Northern Iowa
and Wisconsin Milwaukee. He did not play in the full court games, but did shoot in front of the coaches.
Stefan admits that his recruitment has picked up after a strong summer.
"It's been pretty crazy couple of weeks after Las Vegas," he said. "Five or six phone calls a day. It got pretty crazy."
Stefan has offers from Southern Illinois
, Wisconsin Milwaukee, Northern Iowa and Oral Roberts and recruiting interest from schools such as Gonzaga
, Santa Clara, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa State
, William & Mary, Valparaiso, Colorado State
, Washington State
and Illinois State
. He attended the Minnesota elite camp and camps at Gonzaga, Northern Iowa and Colorado State.
Stefan attended the Minnesota-Northern Illinois
football opener and plans to catch several football games throughout the year.
"I am going to try to make it to a couple of games at Northern Iowa and maybe one at Southern Illinois," he said.
Stefan has kept busy during the Minnetonka's open gyms.
"We are playing on most Mondays and Wednesdays. They are pretty competitive," he said.
Stefan scored in double figures in his first two games last season and reached that mark five times for the Skippers, who finished 28-3 and won the Class AAAA state title.
Stefan will be counted on heavily as the Skippers lost seven seniors who will all play college basketball this fall. They lose Division I signees Anthony Tucker
(Iowa) and C.J. Erickson
), Tyler Schilling, who is at Division II St. Michael's in Vermont, Andrew Latzke and Andy Burns, who are at Division III St. John's, UT Udo at NAIA Mary and key reserve Sedrick McBounds, who is with Western Nebraska (NE) CC.
The Skippers return football players Tyler Nelson and Kyle Risinger
and some talented young players who were overshadowed by the senior talent last year.
Stefan is also a standout baseball player who did not play legion ball this summer due to a hectic AAU schedule. He helped lead his team to the Babe Ruth World Series when he was 13, 14 and 15 years old and was a national batting champion. Stefan was recently invited to the Metrodome, along with top players from seven states and Canada, to participate in a Minnesota Twins
Cole Stefan, a 6-foot-3 junior shooting guard from Minnetonka (MN) High, showed that he is one of the top outside shooters in the Class of 2010. He helped lead Net Gain Sports to the Twin Cities Summer Classic title and the Gold Division championship in the adidas Supper 64 in Las Vegas. GoldenSports.Net recently caught up with Stefan to learn the latest on his recruitment.
