Sam Dower Makes Unofficial Visit to Minnesota
Dower led the Orioles to a 28-1 mark, losing to rival Robbinsdale Cooper 60-59 in the section finals. He averaged 13.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per game and scored in double figures in 23 of 29 games this past season, including a 23-point and 10-rebound effort versus Coon Rapids. The Orioles were dominant with just four games within 10 points as they outscored their opponents 76.0 points to 54.8.
Dower recently narrowed his list of schools to Marquette, Minnesota, California, Gonzaga and George Mason.
Osseo head coach Tim Theisen said that Dower has gotten increased interest from Minnesota.
"They are really high on Sam. They had to evaluate him. This is their first full season of recruiting. They need a "4" and they feel that he can play inside and outside. They want to bring in a guard and they like Rodney Williams. Sam is a piece of the puzzle. They really believe in Sam."
Theisen said that Dower told him that he enjoyed his time at Minnesota today.
"He told me that he had a good visit. He liked what he heard and had a good conversation with the coaches," Theisen said. "He had a good time and was down there for three and a half hours.
Theisen said playing for the the hometown Gophers could be a factor.
"Staying close to home would be nice for his parents," he said. "They are at every single game and his mother is the president of our booster club. I think that it is important for the family, but he is hearing from four other good schools.
Dower will take more of a leadership and scoring role this upcoming season with the loss of leading scorer Carrington Tankson (who is going to San Jacinto CC), Dan Brown (a two-sport standout who is going to Division II St. Thomas) and 7-foot center Zach Peterson (who is headed to Division II Minnesota State-Moorhead).
Dower is a skilled left-handed big man who has made great strides in the past year. He needs to continue to get stronger and improve his shotblocking and rebounding consistency.
Dower had received scholarship offers from Iowa, California, Penn State, St. Louis, Northern Iowa, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Gonzaga, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, George Mason, Montana, Marquette, Illinois State, Santa Clara and Drake.
Dower will visit Gonzaga September 6-8 and will likely visit George Mason the following weekend.
