Glen Rice Jr. Gets Minnesota Interest

Posted May 14, 2008

Glen Rice Jr. has a famous name in the basketball ranks. However, the 6-foot-4 junior guard from Marietta (GA) Walton is making a name for himself. Rice averaged 25 points, six rebounds, 4.5 assists and four steals per game and was the Marietta Daily Journal/Cobb County Boys Basketball Player of the Year. His play with the Georgia Stars has seen him pick up interest from teams like Minnesota.

Glen Rice Jr. led Walton to a 17-10 mark this season, losing to Northview 56-55 in the regional tournament. Northview was led by Minnesota signee Ralph Sampson Jr.

The two Georgia standouts have several things in common, such as a father who was a former college and pro basketball star, receiving interest from the Gophers and having a younger brother who has a chance to be a good basketball player.

Rice's father was a three-time NBA All-Star who spent 15 years in the pro league, was named MVP of the 1997 All-Star game and played for the 2000 world champion Los Angeles Lakers. The older Rice was an All-American at Michigan, where he led the Wolverines to the 1989 national championship and had his jersey number retired at the school. His 184 points scored in the NCAA Tournament is an all-time record.

The junior Rice is hearing from schools such as Clemson, Tennessee Tech, Minnesota, Georgia Tech, Georgia, Virginia Tech, Stanford and Colorado. He plays for the Georgia Stars AAU team.

Rice averaged 18 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game as a sophomore starter.

G'Mitri Rice, Rice's younger brother, is a sophomore 6-foot-2 guard for the Raiders.

The hard work for young Rice seems to be paying off. His talent seems to be turning a corner this season. He had a 32-point performance against Wheeler, a perennial state powerhouse, and a 37-point barrage against Lassiter. The points are coming, just like they always did for his father.
