Kim Royston, a backup free safety at Wisconsin, is transferring to Minnesota, according to sources close to the program. The former Cretin Derham Hall standout played two seasons for the Badgers as a backup defensive back. Royston will sit out the 2008 season and have two years of eligibility remaining. He will not be on scholarship with the Gophers, due to the Big Ten transfer rule.

Kim Royston was a backup free safety behind Shane Carter last season. Carter started all 13 games there in 2007 and was named honorable mention All-Big Ten after leading the conference with seven interceptions.

Royston had considered Minnesota, but committed to Wisconsin. He is the second former Cretin Derham Hall star to transfer back home to Minnesota. Matt Carufel will also sit out the upcoming season after transferring from Notre Dame.

Royston's mother, maternal grandmother and paternal grandmother are graduates of Minnesota.
