Gopher signee Colton Iverson had 36 points and 15 rebounds, but it was not enough as Yankton fell to fourth seed Mitchell 61-59 in their first round game of the State AA Boys Basketball Tournament. Iverson made 16 of 22 shots from the field and was four of eight from the free throw line. Mitchell utilizied their outside shooting to compete with the bigger Yankton team, making 14 three-pointers.
Yankton trailed 19-13 after the first quarter as Mitchell made five three-pointers, including three from Jordan Miller. However, the Bucks outscored Mitchell 15-3 in the second period as
scored the last 11 points in the quarter and the Yankton defense held Mitchell scoreless for the final 6:11 of the half, to take a 28-22 halftime lead.
Yankton took a 36-27 lead, but Mitchell rallied and scored seven straight points and trailed by just four (40-36) at the end of the third quarter.
Randy Kiewel hit three three-pointers to start the period, the third of which tied the game at 45-45. Iverson scored to put the Bucks up 47-45, but Brett Young made another three-pointer to gain a 48-47 lead for Yankton. Iverson scored back-to-back baskets to make it 51-48 with 1:58 left. Iverson made the second of two free throws with 58.3 seconds left. Yankton guard Dylan Slate was fouled with 21.3 seconds left and missed the first free throw. He made the second free throw, but was called for a line violation, leaving the score at 52-48.
Young made a three-pointer from the left corner with 15.2 seconds left and was fouled. His free throw knotted the score at 52.
Travis Neukirch scoried on a pass from Iverson and made two free throws to give Yankton a 56-52 lead. However, But Kiewel countered with another three-pointer. Iverson scored on a dunk off a Yankton miss to make it 58-55 with 2:21 left. Yankton was called for a charge with 1:41 to go and Eric Hieb made both free throws to pull Mitchell within one at 58-57 with 1:27 left.
Slate made the second of two free throws to put Yankton up 59-57 with 27 seconds left, but Kiewel hit his sixth three-pointer of the game with 27 seconds left, putting Mitchell ahead 60-59. Yankton tried to to get the ball into Iverson, but Mitchell triple-teamed him and forced a jump ball with 7.7 seconds left. The Kernels had the possession arrow and Yankton was forced to foul Hieb, who made the first free throw. Yankton had just two players on the line and Hieb was able to grab his own long rebound and dribble out the clock for the win.
Yankton (15-9) will face eighth-seeded Sturgis, which lost to top-ranked Sioux Falls Lincoln. The Scoopers (you've got to love that nickname) are just 8-15.
