Marcus Brumm Still up in the Air

Marcus Brumm, a 6-foot-4 quarterback from Lakeville (MN) South, attended the Minnesota Gopher Junior Day last year and drew the attention of the Minnesota coaching staff. However, fellow quarterback Phil Haig of Henry Sibley ended up getting a scholarship offer from Minnesota, leaving Brumm to look at other options. GoldenSports.Net caught up with Brumm to find the latest on his recruitment.

Marcus Brumm led Lakeville South to a 13-1 mark as they advanced to the Minnesota Prep Bowl, losing to Lake Conference rival Eden Prairie. Brumm completed 157 of 286 passes (54.9% completion percentage) for 2,168 yards with 15 interceptions and 27 touchdowns.

Brumm was named second-team All-Metro by the Minneapolis Star Tribune as a junior after leading the Cougars to a 7-5 mark in the school's first year of existence and a Section 1, Class 4A title after the Cougars started the season 0-2. Brumm paced the Cougars to a 24-19 win over Lakeville North in the first ever meeting of the two teams since spltting into two schools. Brumm threw two touchdowns in the win and ran a two-point conversion.

Lakeville South lost their next two games to fall to 1-4 before winning their next six games, including their three playoff contests by a 128-48 margin. The Cougars lost to eventual Class 4A champion Mahtomedi 20-13 after leading 13-7 going into the fourth quarter as Brumm threw two touchdowns.

Brumm completed 174 of 319 (54.5%) passes for 2,415 yards with 24 touchdowns and 17 interceptions as a junior.

Brumm led Lakeville to a 5-5 mark as a sophomore, losing to Rochester Century 20-13 in the second round. Lakeville split into two schools, forming Lakeville North (the old school) and Lakeville South.

Brumm is also a standout basketball player for Lakeville South. He recently went over the 1,000-point mark in his career with a game-winning free throw in a 65-64 win over Robbinsdale Armstrong Thursday. Brumm is averaging 15.7 points per game and has scored in double figures in 15 of 17 games. Lakeville South started the season 6-0, but has lost four of their last 11 games. South head coach Matt Addington was recently supsended and head football coach Larry Thompson has taken over. Addington is expected to find out his status for the rest of the season tomorrow.

Brumm led the Cougars to an 17-13 mark and a spot in the Minnesota Class AAA State Tournament last season, losing to Waconia 50-46 in the first round. Brumm led them in scoring with 14.5 points per game. He was named honorable mention Associated Press All-State Boys' Basketball team as a junior.

Brumm averaged a team-high 12.4 points per game as a sophomore for Lakeville as the Panthers finished 22-6, losing to Eagan in the Section 1, Class 4A championship game 56-49 after leading 25-15 at halftime.

Brumm came off the bench as a freshman as the Panthers finshed just 18-14, but finished in third place in the Class AAAA tournament.

Brumm had a strong summer with the Minnesota Magic AAU team this summer as they finished in the Final Four in the Orlando AAU Nationals. He paced the Minnesota Magic 16-and-under AAU team to a runner-up finish in the Hoosier Shootout, in the semifinals of the Kentucky Hoopfest and to the Las Vegas Main Event championship the previous summer.

Brumm told GoldenSports.Net Thursday that he is hearing from Division II schools Minnesota Mankato and Winona State, both of whom have offered him a scholarship. Division III schools such as St. Olaf and St. Thomas are hoping to convince Brumm to play both football and basketball in college.

"It (the prospect of playing two sports in college) is kind of appealing," he said.

Lakeville South teammate Brady Soule, Dirk Wilkins and Nick Andreas are expected to sign with Division II Augustana next Wednesday. Brumm said that he plans to make his college choice by next Wednesday.
