Gopher Commit Phil Haig Out For Playoff Game
Haig completed four of eleven passes for 44 yards against Southwest before he was tossed for the game after his second unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Haig was nailed for a penalty during teammate and fellow Minnesota Gopher commit Andre Tate's 53-yard touchdown run. He was hit with a similar penalty during Tate's 85-yard run as he got into a trasdh talking match with the Southwest sideline.
Haig will be forced to sit out their next playoff game versus #3 ranked Lakeville South.
Haig has completed 102 of 173 passes for 1,175 yards with ten touchdowns and two interceptions this season. He has rushed 69 times for 333 yards with five touchdowns.
Haig also serves as the Warriors' kicker, punter and safety. He had one interception against Southwest and had another called back by a Warrior penalty. Haig also dropped a potential interception.
Haig completed 103 of 209 passes for 1,425 yards with 12 touchdowns and just four interceptions last year as he led the Warriors to a 4-5 mark. He was named to the Classic Suburban All-Conference team.
Haig is a three-year starting signal caller for the Warriors. He paced team to 5-6 mark as a sophomore starter and led the Warrriors to Class 5A, Section 5 Finals.
Haig averaged 6.0 points per game this season for the Warriors' basketball team that finished 17-11 and lost to Cretin Derham-Hall in the playoffs.
Basketball is not Haig's top sport, but he is a key contributor to one of the area's top squads.
"Phil is such a good athlete," head basketball coach Tom Dasovich recently told the Minnesota Sun newspaper. "He doesn't play a lot of basketball in the offseason and is better known for football and baseball. He is the kind of kid who'll be really tough in March."
Haig is also a standout pitcher who led the Warriors to a fourth-place finish in the state tournament. Haig attended tryout camps with the Chicago White Sox, Atlanta and Minnesota.
