Blake Sorensen, a 6-foot-2, 204-pound linebacker from Eden Prairie (MN) High, has committed to Northwestern. Sorensen picked the Wildcats over interest from San Diego State, Iowa State, Colorado State and Wyoming.
Blake Sorensen
helped lead Eden Prairie to an 11-2 mark last season, losing to Cretin Derham Hall 42-21 in the state semifinals. He had 80 carries for 475 yards with six touchdowns and caught eight passes for 50 yards. He intercepted two passes for 70 yards and returned three punts for 44 yards.
Sorensen will join Eden Prairie teammate
Bryce McNaul
, who previously committed to
Northwestern
.
"I committed Tuesday night. It was a no-brainer. The coaches are great. The academics are great. It is a Big Ten school. I liked everything about it."
Sorensen said that he did not plan on making his college choice so early, but decided that Northwestern was the place for him.
"I planned to decide after a few games, but I thought what was I waiting for. It had everything I wanted, so why wait."
Sorensen said that he picked Northwestern over
San Diego State
and
Iowa State
. He also had offers from
Colorado State
and
Wyoming
.
Sorensen said he attended the
Minnesota
team camp, but did not received an offer from the Gophers.
"I ran a 4.48 40-yard dash at the camp, but nothing really happened for Bryce and I with the Gophers."
Sorensen and his Eden Prairie teammates will open the season Thursday against Apple Valley. Eden Prairie is one of the favorites for the Class AAAAA title and Sorensen is looking forward to the season opener.
"It'll be fun."
Sorensen is a rare three-sport athlete who also plays baseball (catcher) and basketball (guard).
Sorensen said that he mostly played JV on the basketball team, but will be asked to carry more of the load this year as the Eagles finished 24-3 lost most of the top players from a squad that lost in the section finals to state champion Hopkins.
"We have no one coming back."
