John Carlson Undergoes Position Change
Carlson completed 92 of 177 passes (52 percent) for 1,321 yards with eight touchdowns and nine interceptions as a senior. He rushed 79 times for 476 (6.0 yards per carry) with nine rushing touchdowns. Carlson led the Royals to a 4-6 mark this season.
Carlson participated in spring practice last year, but did not play in any games this season. He underwent surgery on Dec. 6 for a torn right rotator cuff.
Carlson told GoldenSports.Net his shoulder was totally reconstructed. He said that the recovery time is four to six months. Carlson can start lifting weights after four months, but the injury will keep him out of most of spring practice.
Carlson said that he suffered the injury running an option play in practice when he admits that he was "creamed." The surgery resulted in the doctors tightening his whole shoulder, meaning that he can no longer throw.
Carlson said that the injury has caused him to move to free safety, a position he has not play since grade school.
Carlson is an excellent athlete who ran the 110-high hurdles in high school.
Carlson was selected as a PrepStar All-America and was ranked the 17th best quarterback in the nation by ESPN's Tom Lemming. He was selected for the SuperPrep Midwest Team, ranked as the 40th-best player. Carlson was an all-state selection and was a three-time all-conference performer. He threw for 5,500 yards and 43 touchdowns in his prep career, completing 60 percent of his passes and also rushed for 1,650 yards in his career with 29 touchdowns. Carlson was an A-roll honor student.
