RB Maurice Alexander to leave football team

Maurice Alexander, a 5-foot-8, 185-pound running back, has decided to leave Minnesota and transfer to Eastern Michigan, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Alexander failed to qualify last season as a freshman, but joined the team for spring practices. He was listed fourth on the depth chart at running back behind 1,000-yard rushers Laurence Maroney and Marion Barber and redshirt freshman Amir Pinnix.

Maurice Alexander reportedly was the lone Gopher who failed to pass the annual running test at the start of fall camp. Alexander was an all-city, all-county, all-conference, all-area and all-state selection in 2002. He amassed 4,220 yards on 541 carries with 42 touchdowns for his career and totaled 1,120 yards on 180 carries with 14 touchdowns in nine games his senior season. Alexander would have to sit out the 2004 season and would be eligible in 2005.

Eastern Michigan features senior Anthony Sherrell, who rushed for 1,531 yards last season. Sherrell finished eighth in the country last season.
