Chicago (IL.) Mount Carmel senior defensive tackle Steven Richardson held offers from Northern Illinois and Toledo, but felt Minnesota was too good to pass up. He reflects back at why Minnesota was right for him and how much his relationship with Defensive Line Coach Jeff Phelps came into play.
"I committed on April 29th to Minnesota," Richardson told GopherDigest. "I always wanted to commit to Minnesota, but I wanted to do it in person, so either I was going to go down there and commit or one of the coaches were going to come up. Coach Phelps came up for out morning workouts, so I did it after the workouts."
"I picked them over a series of reasons. The reasons were that they had faith in me, the coaches are like mine, the players are cool, the campus is nice and it felt like home. Finally, my connection with Coach Phelps was a big one too. Coach Phelps is the man! Coach and I have a great relationship. I talk to him often and I love his coaching style."
With the 5-11, 280-pound mammoth defensive tackle in the fold for the Gophers, what does he hope to bring with him when he arrives on campus?
"Well, I'm used to winning, so I hope to make Minnesota not to be underdogs, but feared," said Richardson. "I will also bring my game and that means I play one play at a time. I'm not the one to get all hyped or cheer after a play I make. I would just walk back to the huddle and get ready for the next play. I am just ready to see Minnesota have a great season!"
