The Gophers have one quarterback in their class with Kansas City (KS.) Wyandotte quarterback Dimonic McKinzy, but are still looking to add depth. One of the possible candidates to help fix that is Roseville (MN.) quarterback Jacques Perra. Quarterback Coach Jim Zebrowski felt the under the radar signal caller has what it takes to play at the next level and offered him a walk-on spot at Minnesota.
"Coach Limegrover recently messaged me telling me that Coach Zebrowski saw enough of me to tell me that I'd be a great addition to the Gophers as a walk on," Perra told GopherDigest. "They already have their commit for the 2014 QB, so they offered me to be on the team as a walk-on."
"I really think it could be a good opportunity for me because since they already have their commit I think I could compete with him to maybe eventually earn a scholarship or be the quarterback. I feel like the other quarterback is more of an athlete and could play a different position."
Despite living in Minnesota, his family are actually Wisconsin fans with a connection to Badger athletics, so how does he look at the Gophers now?
"I like how Minnesota's program is on the rise and they have a really bright future," said Perra. "They're my hometown team. I really like the way their coaches coach because I visited a practice in the spring and the environment was amazing. I actually grew up a Badger fan because my mom played volleyball there, so she obviously influenced me, but ever since Minnesota started to recruit me, I've been a Gopher fan."
The 6-3, 195-pound quarterback has also been hearing from North Dakota State, North Dakota, Drake, Northern Iowa, Northern Illinois, South Dakota State, but holds no offers to this point. The walk-on offer at Minnesota is very appealing to him, so when could a decision be coming and what will be the factors when he makes that ultimate decision?
"I'm not sure yet on that decision date," said Perra. "I'll probably wait till after the football season until my official visits and see what the right fit for me. I really have to determine if I want to go to a Big Ten program and have the experience or if I'd want to go to a FCS school and play more, so that's going to be the deciding factor I think."
