NEB: Report Card

Taylor Martinez surrounded by Lions.

Who made the grade and who came up short as the Nittany Lions lost at Nebraska? We fill you in.

LINCOLN, Neb. — Our report card from Penn State’s 32-23 loss to No. 16 Nebraska here Saturday.

OVERALL: The Lions did a lot of good things. But they made some huge mistakes, too.
Grade: C

OFFENSE: We like the 391 total yards. But the offense went into the proverbial tank after the tough fumble call on TE Matt Lehman in the fourth quarter. This group has to be more resilient against the better teams on the slate.
Grade: C

DEFENSE: Nebraska ran the ball with too much ease in the second half.
Grade: C-

SPECIAL TEAMS: The best game yet by the combo of Sam Ficken and Alex Butterworth.
Grade: B+

COACHING: Once again, the Lions were seriously outplayed in the third quarter. That told us the other team made better adjustments at the break.
Grade: C

INTANGIBLES: State played with a lot of heart. But when things got tight in the fourth quarter, it could not rebound from a bad officiating call.
Grade: C

OTHER GUY: Nice comeback by Taylor Martinez and company. The Huskers were not frazzled, even down 20-6.
Grade: B

OFFICIALS: We get blowing a call on the field. But how do you blow a replay call with the type of video evidence available on the Lehman fumble?
Grade: F-

CROWD: What a great group of fans. Never bailed on their team. And they were extremely nice to the Lions before and after the game. This is one class operation.
Grade: A
