Prep Career Highlights:
Hayes has helped lead team to 20-2 record over last two seasons, including berths in the section finals (2011) and the state semifinals (2010). He was named first-team all-state by the Associated Press and the Pioneer Press and named first-team all-conference following his senior season.
Coach Matt Limegrover's Take:
"Isaac Hayes, local product from over at St. Thomas Academy. The thing that you'll notice with Isaac when you watch his high school film is it's hard for offensive lineman, play in and play out, to show up and to pop off the screen and he does.
"There's a nastiness and a relentlessness that, frankly, you whish everybody had because he wants to decimate whoever he's going against every play, whether he's pulling, whether he's zone blocking, whether he's carrying the football—which they did a little bit of with him.
"He's a guy that he's not going to stop until the defender is on his back. Like I said, it's hard to have a guy show up play after play as an offensive lineman but he does. We're going to play him at center and [we] just feel like he's a guy who's future is real, real bright."
Getting to Know:
How's the offseason going?
"It's going pretty good. I'm actually on Coach Klein's strength and conditioning program so I've just been doing the running and lifting that is on there."
What's your current height and weight?
"I'm 6-foot-2, 290 pounds."
"I chose Minnesota because I will be able to play in front of family and friends, and I like the coaches a lot. The Big Ten, I think, is one of the most competitive conferences in the country, so I couldn't pass that up. I've been watching the Gophers ever since I was little, and I want to get [the program] turned around."
When did you know you wanted to be a Gopher, and what was the experience like when you informed the coaches you'd be coming to Minnesota?
"I knew that I wanted to be a Gopher when I went to a spring practice and it was a really nice day outside in [TCF Bank] the stadium. I just realized that I couldn't pass up the opportunity to play in my home state with these great facilities. When I informed the coaches that I would be coming to Minnesota, Coach Kill jumped on me, and he and Coach Limegrover were really excited."
Any idea what you'd like to major in?
"I hope to major in some kind of engineering."
What are your goals for next season?
"My goals are to get my technique down and just work as hard as I can."
