Posted Apr 9, 2012

University of Minnesota men’s basketball head coach Tubby Smith and the Golden Gopher basketball program today announced that guard Chip Armelin has asked for, and will be granted release from his scholarship. Armelin will remain on campus scholastically through the end of the semester.

“Chip has been a valuable part of our program for the past two seasons,” said Smith. “He has done everything we have asked of him and we are grateful for his contributions to this program on and off of the court. We are sad that he has elected to leave but certainly want to wish him the very best.”

Armelin played in all 38 games this season for the Golden Gophers and contributed career-highs in multiple categories, including points (5.2 ppg), rebounds (2.1 rpg) and minutes played (13.7 mpg). He will leave the program with averages of 4.8 points and 1.8 rebounds in 69 career games.
