Live Evaluation: Will Johnson

Live Evaluation: Will Johnson

A live evaluation of Osseo (Minn.) tight end Will Johnson in a game against Blaine.

Will Johnson
Osseo
Class: 2012
Position: TE
Ht: 6'7"
Wt: 240
Recruiting Notes: Offers from Minnesota, Iowa St., Iowa, Auburn, and Mississippi.

Johnson is one of those rare tight ends who has great size, good speed, and is equally effective as a run blocker or as a receiving threat. He gets after people when blocking, using his hands well to lock onto defenders and driving them out of the way, always sticking to his blocks until the whistle.

When his assignment called for him to get out to a linebacker to block, he always took a good angle to get there and cut the defender off to seal the edge. He also stays low and uses good leverage when blocking, which can be difficult for someone with his height.

As a receiver, Johnson is deceptively fast, runs nice routes, and catches the ball very well even in traffic. He easily creates mismatches – his long stride makes it easy for him to run past linebackers and he is too big for most defensive backs to handle.

He is good at finding open pockets in zone defenses and improvises well when his quarterback is forced to scramble. He ran a stick route several times in this game, and always dipped his shoulder down and gave a good head fake inside before making his break, again helping him to get open against underneath zone coverage.

He also proved to be very difficult for defenders to bring down after he catches the ball - he dragged about four or five guys with him on one play before finally hitting the ground. Johnson will make a great addition to whichever college team he eventually chooses to play for.
