Ellenson, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard out of Rice Lake (Wisc.) gave his verbal commitment to Tubby Smith and the Gophers earlier today.
“I just told them I would love to play with them for the next four years and I want to be a Gopher,” said Ellenson.
With Ellenson being the first commit for 2012, Smith was pleased about the call.
“Tubby [Smith] wasn’t really expecting it yet but he was pretty excited,” he said.
Ellenson’s decision came just a couple days after his unofficial visit to Minnesota.
“Well after the visit, I really felt good about the school and I just took a couple days to talk to my parents and really just thought it was the best place to go,” he said.
A number of things stood out to Ellenson about the Gophers and helped lead to a commitment.
“Well Tubby is a great coach,” he said. “They have a great program. And also it’s really close to home so a lot of family and friends can come watch the games.”
Ellenson had not planned on committing so soon but saw that it was the perfect opportunity.
“I thought it was the best place, the closest place and I might as well take it right away,” he said.
Along with the offer from Minnesota, Ellenson had a number of other teams pursuing him.
“I was going to take officials to West Virginia, Nebraska and then Kansas was supposed to stop by my house,” he said.
Ellenson’s shooting ability and his great athleticism make him a dynamic player.
“I’m a shooting guard that shoots the three and likes to drive and go up and dunk,” he said when asked to describe his game.
Although he has made his college commitment, Ellenson knows he still has to work hard to improve before he makes the leap to the college level.
“Totally just work my game and try to get my shot down to where I know I’m going to be making it. Just constantly working on my shot.”
