Tharpe jumps at Jayhawk Offer
Turner chose to attend Arizona, leaving Kansas with a scholarship open to give to a point guard. Prior to Wednesday, Tharpe was considered one of the top uncommitted point guards in the nation. Self personally traveled to offer Tharpe a scholarship who accepted on the spot despite never taking a visit to Kansas.
Tharpe is one of the top points in the country and ranked 17th at the position by Scout.com. When watching Tharpe it is easy to see his strengths. He is a kid who possesses a great handle as well as the speed to go with it. Tharpe easily gets by defenders where is proficient around the hoop but is best at finding an teammate for an open shot.
At 6-foot-0, Tharpe does not have great size but is an explosive leaper who can elevate near the basket. Tharpe is an excellent addition to any class and is a steal by Bill Self this late in the recruiting process.
The loss of Tharpe is a serious blow to the Gophers' recruiting class. Tharpe was the highest rated player left holding a scholarship from Minnesota. The only player remaining is combo guard Andre Hollins from Tennessee. Hollins who can play both guard positions would still be a solid player to compliment the wing play of commit Joe Coleman. The loss of Tharpe hurts but the Gophers can still put together a solid class.
